I am welding 4130 and am using ER70S6 filler rod. The ER70S6 is currently recommended by Kent White of Tinmantech and is easier to obtain than the R-45 since it is used for both gas and electric. I have read that it sparks more than the R-45 but I have not noticed any problems.

I have his Meco Midget torch and a full set of tips and I have been using it to weld the 4130 and also aluminum. For the fuselage if you only had one torch I would go with that one. It is a little pricey but I am glad I got it along with the light weight hose.

1/16" is all I've needed. I don;t imagine you'll need anything thicker. Those prices look ok. As long as you get what you pay for then you should be good. All places like ACS , etc are doing is sourcing welding rod from existing suppliers.PoconoJohn wrote:

Any good local welding supply shop should be able to provide the proper rod for the type of metal you are welding. Just tell them what welding equipment you have and that it's for 4130 steel.

I'll buy the ER70S6 from tinman (along with full face shield)...how many pounds do you think I should get? I'll be practicing a lot also.
