According to the specs the CB-1 should have a empty weight of around 850 lbs and a gross weight around 1400-1450 lbs; So, a 500-600 lb useful load. What are the real numbers? Can the CB-1 really handle 450 lbs of people/gear and a couple hours of fuel?

Ryan,
My ship is a CB-1 with an 0-320, built strictly to plans with the exception of dual tail wires. Original empty weight was 917lbs. The size of the cockpits will pretty much guarantee that you won't exceed gross. Remember the builder decides what 'gross' will be. I'm 6'5'' and weigh 185, I've had passengers in excess of 300 lbs with full fuel and had no problem. You would have to be hauling lead bars in the rear baggage compartment to go over gross or out of CG range.
My home airport is at 1500 asl, so I can't speak for performance at high altitude fields or with smaller powerplants.
