Others have reached this point before (duh) but this is one of those right-of-passage points in the build process, so here are my photos of the parts.
According to plans: After fitting: In place, with spacers: What do you do with the gap between the plates and the cross member?

Heat them up, bend them in and weld them to the cross tube.

I used a piece of 090 4130 to fill the gap.
