False Ribs

So I finally scraped together enough cash to start my Hatz (#163), and I'm putting together a list for my first order to Aircraft Spruce. I had assumed that the false ribs were made from 1/4" ply until I noticed the note in the bill of materials calling for 1/8". Is that right? 1/8 seems kinda flimsy.... Also the plans just call out plywood. I was going to order 1/16 mahogany for the gussets, and Domestic birch (90 degree plys)for all the 1/4 stuff. I'd appreciate anyone that would confirm or correct me.
Thanks

Congratulations on getting started, I am three years in and look forward to working a little every day.
As for the false ribs, I made mine from 1/4 birch plywood. The plans call out for 1/8 but I thought the 1/4 would be much easier to work with.

Thanks. I think I may stay with the 1/8 to save weight and money. I was worried about the false ribs taking a side load, but I forgot that they had plywood on top and bottom, so they are really enclosed.
What kind of 1/16 plywood did you use on the center section? Is birch ok, or do I need mahogany?

The choice between birch and mahogany is up to you; either is acceptable for what you are doing.
If you use birch, make sure you scuff the surface where the glue joint is. The manufacturing process leaves a slick "hard" finish and the glue won't secure as well as the rougher mahogany.
Good Luck and have fun!

Thanks JB! I'm looking forward to getting started. I even cleaned off my workbench! I haven't seen the top of it in over a year....
