Hatz Biplane Association

Can someone supply me with a drawing for the ends as well as a material spec. ?
I will see what I can do about getting some ends machined. I know I can get them made just not sure of the cost until I have the drawing and material spec in hand.
I do not have my Hatz drawings yet and won't until sometime in January.

Everything you need is on page 22 of the plans. If someone can scan it then you can get a head start, otherwise you'll have to wait for your copy.

I'll try to remember to scan and post tonight.

I've decided to buy the midwest terminals just to fit my cabanes and interplanes, and then fly with Ebby's custom-made terminals. The Midwest ones are $11 each and will make just fine placeholders until the real deals arrive. I'll have my top wings finished this winter and by spring I really, really want to put my fuselage and wings together so I can sit in it and make noises!

Jeff from Makelan got back to me with another response. He found some forks on McMaster Carr that fit the dimensions. He said he would order a couple and check them out. Obviously, we don't know if they meet aviation standards.

Two things, first I live just south east of Lake Ontario in what we affectionately call the 'snow belt' and we have been getting nailed with snow this winter. This translates into good business for my friend who owns the machine shop and also sells snow plows. So there has been no movement on the clevis ends. Second, I compared the measurements given on the McMaster Carr website with the Midwest clevis I have and all given measurements are the same for both clevis ends. The one measurement not given on the McMaster Carr site is the depth the slot was cut into the end. The Midwest slot depth is 1.125". When Jeff S. gets the McMaster Carr pieces hopefully the slots are what the plans specify.

Unfortunately I have no exciting news regarding the terminals. I saw Frank about a week ago and he had purchased a 304 stainless blank from his supplier but has not made any progress in setting up the CNC for producing the terminals. I would like to test the Midwest samples in tension to see how they compare to the AN665 terminals. I did some rudimentary calculations and came up with a prediction of an approximate tensile strength of 8000 lbs breaking strength. Another friend of mine has access to a materials testing lab at out local community college. I just have to catch him at the right moment and he could test one of the Midwest terminals I purchased on speculation.

I have to apologize as my friend has not come through with the custom terminals. That's the bad news. Better news is I checked out McMaster Carr's website and found the clevis ends mentioned by Jeff at Makelan. They come in two different sizes and either left or right hand thread for around $6.00 a piece. I believe the ones with a 1/4" bolt hole and 5/16" x 24 threads are the same ones Midwest has in stainless steel or plain steel. The ones with the 5/16" bolt hole and 5/16" x 24 threads (which I ordered) have a beefier construction. Fortunately the thread size are to plans specs but the bolt hole is a bit larger. I can live with that and plan on using them on my inter-planes by making a minor modification to accommodate the 5/16" bolt size. This would cause a negligible change in weight. If my friend comes through with the custom clevis ends I will notify the forum.

Thanks for following up on this. I'm frustrated that we can't find an aviation source for these.
