Wing Walk

by Jackal » Tue Dec 21, 2010 9:53 pm

Page 24 has limited info on the wing walk construction, but I think I understand it. I'd appreciate confirmation of my interpretation though.

It looks like the root rib and the next rib out are cut from solid 1/4" thick spruce - That means 2 less stick ribs to build:)

Is that correct are is the solid spruce rib just glued to the inside of the existing stick ribs?

Either way it appears the solid spruce ribs are notched to accomodate the 5/8 x 5/8 cross members that are spaced 8" apart, or are they attached some other way than being notched for?

I'm guessing that the top ply follows the contour of the upper wing surface and goes from the front spar to the trailing edge of the wing and the bottom ply skin is stated to go only between the spar and t/e - I'm guessing that is the aft spar and trailing edge.

If the root rib is solid spruce I also am guessing there is no reason to add a solid 1/16" ply to that rib as is attached to the other root ribs.

Has anyone used 1/4" plywood instead of 1/4" spruce for these solid ribs. It seems like they would be stronger and could even have lightening holes cut in them and still be stronger and no heavier than spruce???
