I'll buy the ER70S6 from tinman (along with full face shield)...how many pounds do you think I should get? I'll be practicing a lot also.

In other news, I decided to just get everything Smith...I think  (from ACS):

AW1 handle
AW201/3/5 tips
RA921 twin hose
the single stage regulators

along with tip cleaners, flint lighter, welding apron and two bags of practice tubing

Did I miss anything?

Any good local welding supply shop should be able to provide the proper rod for the type of metal you are welding. Just tell them what welding equipment you have and that it's for 4130 steel.

What do you think about this place and prices? Would you buy here? https://weldingsupply.com/cgi-bin/einstein.pl
1/16" is all I've needed. I don;t imagine you'll need anything thicker. Those prices look ok. As long as you get what you pay for then you should be good. All places like ACS , etc are doing is sourcing welding rod from existing suppliers.

Thanks Doug...I found a local supplier selling RG-45:

Product Name: INWELD TIG ROD TIG RG-45 1/16 x 36 x 3# TUBE (oxy fuel welding)
Product ID: INWMTP3RG45062
Manufacturer: Inweld Filler Metals
GTS Price $13.30

Will I need a thicker than 1/16 rod at some point?

What do you think about this place and prices? Would you buy filler here? It says house brand, but it appears to be AWS certified. https://weldingsupply.com

Check your local welding supply house. I can get filler rod (R-45) locally.

I am welding 4130 and am using ER70S6 filler rod. The ER70S6 is currently recommended by Kent White of Tinmantech and is easier to obtain than the R-45 since it is used for both gas and electric. I have read that it sparks more than the R-45 but I have not noticed any problems.
Read a little here from tinmantech.com: https://www.tinmantech.com/html/welding ... msteel.php
I have his Meco Midget torch and a full set of tips and I have been using it to weld the 4130 and also aluminum. For the fuselage if you only had one torch I would go with that one. It is a little pricey but I am glad I got it along with the light weight hose.
Keep warm.

I want to buy R-45 filler rod for OA welding. I looked at AS&S and Wicks, but everything seems to be TIG. I can't even find the ID R-45. Where can I buy it or is it called something else now? Thanks!

Thanks. I've watched the tin man video (old VHS tapes), and download all I could find at EAA, as well as a few books. I've also been looking at this page at the tim man site:
https://www.tinmantech.com/html/kits_4130.php

I'll wait for the workshop, then go shopping. Maybe it'll make a nice getaway for me and my wife, hmmmm.
